First Day of School/Mom's Liberation Day

I am old.  I am SO old.  I have a high schooler.  I swear I was just a high schooler a few years ago.  Savannah started 9th grade this year.  It's technically still in the Jr High, but it's high school, nonetheless.  She has blossomed into such a beautiful young woman.  I have enjoyed immensely watching her discover her talents and passions and I get a glimpse every now and then of what she will be like as an adult in the not-distant-enough future.  She is excited to be at the top of the school food chain this year.

Irelynd, too, is at the top of the school this year.  She is entering 6th grade.  I have 4 kids in the same school this year, for the only time ever.  She has Mrs Anderson and Mrs Treff.  She was hoping for Mr Crockett again (he moved up to 6th this year), but is still excited for a new school year.

It has finally happened {sniff, sniff!}!  Brighton is in all day school!  He has Mrs. Aagard, and is really excited for school.  He'll get to eat lunch at school this year with the big kids.  His teacher looks like she is ready to handle any of this kids' antics.
My babies are in Kindergarten!  Why does time have to go by so fast?!  Keaton seems too little to me to be sending him off to school.  He and Waverly will be the Ms Mellor's class this year.  She was Brighton's teacher last year, and is fantastic.  They have all been so excited to start school.  The twins had to wait an extra week for their first day, and it about killed them.  I loved the extra week with them, without the big kids around.
I just love Keaton's smile.  He is such a funny little kid.  He picked out his own outfit at the store.  He found what matched and put them together.  I was rather impressed, being just 5.
Look out, Ms Mellor's class!  Here comes Miss Priss!  The kids all went shopping with Grandma LeBaron for school clothes this year.  They all picked out their own, with no help from Grandma.  I absolutely love that this outfit reflects Waverly's personality so well, with the pink frills, sparkles, and Hello Kitty.  She could hardly wait to wear her new outfit, and I had to hide it and Keaton's to protect them for this day.

The Gruesome Twosome.  The twins will be staying together this year, and probably many years to come.  They need the security of having each other close, and being boy/girl twins, I'm sure will do just fine together.  It's been a rough road to get them to this age.  Alive.  But I'm so grateful for the priviledge of this experience that not every mother gets.  They are the best of friends most times, but also the worst of enemies.  I'm going to miss you, my little twins!

Brighton is excited to have the twins join him at school this year too.  I'm glad my kids will have one year all together before Irelynd goes her separate way to Jr High.
We had a fun summer, and it was not long enough, but it is also good to get back to a routine.  I will miss the free days to pick up and go somewhere fun with my brood, but I'm excited to see them enter school and grow and learn.

9 months old

Boston's favorite place to be at 9 months is the bathtub.  He LOVES his baths, and splashes, open handed on the water.  The more splashing, the better.  When he's not in the tub, he likes to crawl over to it and stand up and yell at it, hoping it will result in a bath with bubbles.
His least favorite place to be is his carseat.  Can't really blame him there.  Strapped in, facing and riding backwards, blech.  I'd yell too.
Favorite foods:  Cheerios, bread, fruit (kind of proving to be a picky kid)
Least favorite:  green beans.  He spits them out every time, whole, mashed, roasted...not happening.
New skill:  he can crawl!  And pull himself up on things.
Favorite item:  his plug.
He's still such a happy, easy-going little guy.  I love how he snuggles right into me, and puts his hands around my shoulders, and holds on to my shirt, or hair.  He is so loving and sweet; a perfect caboose baby.  I wish I could just keep him this size forever.  I'm going to miss this pudge when he's a big, grown, smelly boy.

How to share a sucker

Happiness is when your big sister brings home a sucker from school and shares with you.  You must never remove your hand from the stick because you might not get it back.  You must keep your eyes firmly glued to the target to make sure no biting occurs.  And you must only allow a few seconds of shared sucking before you must grunt to remind her that it is, after all, your sucker now.
Ok, Savannah, my turn now.  Ahhh, sugar.  Where have you been all my life?

Take a trip Tuesday: Salt Lake City by Frontrunner

At the beginning of summer, my mom invited us to go to Salt Lake on the Frontrunner with her.  Well, a teenager has a busy life, and it took until the week before school started before we found time to go.  We met at the station in Provo to board the 10:40 train.  Someone (I won't use any names to protect the guilty) couldn't find her shoes, and we were barrelling down the freeway trying to make it in time.  Somehow, by the grace of God, we made it.  We had to sprint across the tracks and run for it, but I was able to buy tickets, and we got to the platform before the train left.  As we got up to the train, the door opened, and Waverly stepped inside.  Just then the door closed behind her, before the rest of us was able to board, sealing her away from us.  Savannah had a panic attack, and started yelling "no! No No!"  The attendant there opened the door for us, and allowed a very scared Waverly to exit.  It was only a moment, but it scared the two of them.  We laughed about it after the fright wore off.
We took a trip on the Frontrunner in December to Temple Square, not long after the train started running.  It was CRAZY!  I was a little nervous going again with all 6 kids, with just my mom to help me, but it was not busy at all, and was not too hard.  Savannah is such a good surrogate mother; I could not do it without her help.  I am grateful to have such a good kid as my first.
When we went in December, it was dark outside, so it was fun to actually see where we were going this time around.  Though, the kids were not as mesmerized by the experience as they were before.  They were anxious to get there.  Boston was so good on the trip.  He just chills and is so easy-going.
When we got off in Salt Lake, we took Trax over to the City Creek Center, since we hadn't seen it yet.  We stopped at JB's to eat lunch first, courtesy of my mom.  Keaton ordered a cheeseburger and a plate of spaghetti and meatballs.  He is a little guy, but can really eat a lot sometimes!
City Creek is so pretty!  I wanted to go inside of Tiffany's, just to say I have, but decided against it, with my 6 kids.  That would be too scary!  Savannah and I did some shopping at H&M and Forever 21, getting some school clothes for her.  We walked around a bit, and the kids loved the big fountain in the center.

I'm not sure what's got Irelynd upset here, but I love her expression.  I imagine Brighton has probably splashed her.
Waverly made friends with this cute little girl while we were here.  She makes friends everywhere we go; I love how open she is to other kids, and how she is so friendly.  Wouldn't it be great if adults all did the same thing, and just opened up to each other, calling each other "friend"?
After the mall, we walked through Temple Square to get to the Beehive House.  We had intended on seeing it earlier in the summer when we came up to see Tracy Aviary and the Capitol, but parking is a nightmare.  I was surprised by how much the kids wanted to see Brigham Young's house.  While walking through Temple Square, we passed by this old fashioned fountain.  It was the kind that you pump with your foot to make it go.  The kids were amazed by it.  Everyone had to have a drink from it.
I thought this was a cool shot of the Assembly Hall reflected in the building.
I can't believe I didn't get any shots of the Beehive House, seeing as how everyone was so looking forward to it.  Probably because of the million and one stairs to carry Boston up, and rooms to keep pulling Brighton out of.  We enjoyed the tour; it was conducted by a sister missionary from New Zealand.  I think I listened more to her accent than to what she was actually saying.  The other sisters there oohed and ahhed over Boston.  One of them thought  he looked like Jack-Jack from The Incredibles.  I guess he does.
Next we walked back through City Creek looking for ice cream.  We went through the food court (didn't find any ice cream, but found a fun play place!)  We stopped to let everyone have some free time, and to let Boston out of the stroller and crawl around.  It was themed after dinosaurs.  It's a just-hatched Bostonasaurus!
Yikes!  This one will be scary!  It's a Tyrannasaurus Brighton!
Boston was ecstatic to be let out of captivity, and crawled around squealing for joy.

Savannah is just a very tall 6-year-old.
Yahoo!  We finally found ice cream!  We had to walk to Harmon's Grocery store, which was reached by going under the street, in a tunnel, which by all appearances, the city tried its hardest to keep strictly hidden.  But we found it, and were richly rewarded with the best gelato I have ever had in my life!  I had orange something-or-other, and cinnamon roll.  They served them in these cute little plastic cupcake liner-looking cups with little spatulas.  So cute!  I had to keep them, of course.  Since it was approaching dinnertime, Savannah and I grabbed some sandwich stuff from downstairs in the grocery store, and we headed back to the train station.
This was supposed to be reminiscent of Marilyn Monroe's train shot, but she turned her head right at the wrong time, and the light turned green so we had to run after this.  Stupid us, we were having so much fun in Salt Lake that we forgot we came on a train, and trains run on schedules.  We realized when we missed the trax back to the Frontrunner station, that we'd also miss the 7:00 Frontrunner back to Provo, and would have to wait another hour, or try to walk to the next station.  We chose option 2, and realized we should have just waited the hour at the first station, because there was no way I was going to be able to drag 6 tired kids, and a tired grandma 6 very LARGE city blocks in a matter of 15 minutes.  Also adding in a pit stop for a child that has a very tiny bladder, and it was another miss.  Oh well, Scott just earned another quiet hour at home before we arrived back, lucky him!
We finally made it to the station and boarded the train home.  We had a great time, and I am so grateful to have my mom close enough to be able to do things like this with her.  I know she won't be around forever, as she is near 80, and I hope my kids will remember having fun times with her like this.  We love you Grandma!

Take a trip Tuesday: Hollywood Connection

For Christmas this year, we got 7 Peaks Passes for the first time.  We sure got our use out of them!  One of our favorite places to go was Hollywood Connection in West Valley.  The roller coaster was just the right size, we loved the little kiddy rides, but our favorite was the bumper cars.  Keaton, especially, LOVED this attraction.  He would grin ear-to-ear while he was slamming into us.  As soon as it was over, he'd run back around and get in line again.  I loved just watching his delight in driving his own car.  But don't be fooled by his angelic grin; he'd slam harder than anyone.
One funny story from this ride was when all the kids were in cars, and there was a particular little boy, about 9 years old, that kept trapping Brighton against the wall.  No matter how hard he tried to free himself, the kid kept him pinned.  So Brighton yelled to Savannah when she came near to help him.  She bumped the kid out of the way, freeing Brighton, but then he trapped her.  So she called to Irelynd to help.  Irelynd came over and bumped him out of the way, freeing Savannah.  They were both too smart to get pinned again, and let the poor kid have it.  We joke that he learned quickly that if you pick on one Henry, you pick on all of us (and especially don't mess with the redheads).  One good point about being from a big family!

Take a Trip Tuesday: Art city days Art Festival

We have done the Art City Festival for the past 2 years, so of course we had to make it part of our summer trips.  We invited our cousins to come with us, so no one was bored with just siblings.
Brighton, and the "other" twins: Cami and Cadi
It's funny; out of these 6 kids, only 2 are singletons.
 Wrigley, Keaton and Waverly
One of the activities that everyone loves to do is the facepainting.  Waverly got some ballet shoes for hers.

Even Keaton sprouted a fish on his face.
Brighton became a lion.  Boston is just chillin.
And Irelynd and Maddie got double face-painting.  They enjoyed the freedom of roaming around just the two of them, without their moms tagging along behind them.  They are both growing up fast!
Savannah and Chloe roamed Main Street while the littler ones did the Festival.  They are too cool for this.

Aislynn's baptism

My brother Kevin's daughter, Aislynn, got baptized in June.  We went down to St George for it, along with my mom, my sisters Patti and Julie, and brother Craig.  We were missing my older sisters Michelle and Moana.  We spent our time swimming at the hotel pool, did a little shopping, the kids sampled a buffet for the first time, and just hung out at Kevin's with family, which I love.  This is most of my family here in front of Kevin's house: Kevin, Julie, Mom, Patti, me, and Craig.

Waverly

I finally got around to taking pictures of Waverly for her 5th birthday.  She agreed to pose for me, but had to have artistic license to throw her own personality into it.  I was more than happy to capture her true personality in some of her shots.  Like the one below.  I call it her Frenchman pucker.
I also asked her some questions to capture her at 5.  Here are the questions and answers:
Who is your favorite person in the whole world? "Annika" (her 2nd cousin who lives in NM, and she's only seen once, but they clicked immediately.)
Favorite color:  Pink, of course!
Favorite tv show:  Sophia the First
Favorite outfit: "my purple and black owl outfit." {also the one pictured!}
Favorite food: mac & cheese
Fave song:  Pinkalicious
Fave cereal:  Cap'n Crunch
Best friend:  Wrigley
What do you want to be when you grow up?
"a singer!"
Favorite book:  Pinkalicious
What are you really good at?  "doing cartwheels"
Where do you want to go on vacation?  "Disneyland"
What is your best memory of summer?  "going to 7 Peaks"
What would you buy if you had $1000?  "silly string"  {hm, good thing you don't have that much money then!}
Which vegetable do you hate the most?  broccoli and mashed potatoes.
If you could have one wish, what would it be?  "to be a princess" {and this expression would go so lovely with your tiara, Waverly!}
as would this one...
I love her mischevious grin here, and the way her nose crinkles up!
Favorite ice cream flavor:  vanilla
What do you like to do best with your friends?  paint and play princess
What do you hope you get to do before your next birthday?  "have a sleepover"

Funny story interjection:  at the beginning of summer, Waverly and Wrigley were playing at Wrigley's house.  When I went to go pick her up, they were both begging for a sleepover.  We only allow sleepovers with cousins, and not before the age of 6, minimum.  Being 4 at the time, I said no.  Then I got engrossed in a conversation with Wrigley's mom, my sister-in-law, who is my great friend.  Pretty soon, we noticed that Waverly and Wrigley had disappeared.  All my other kids were there running around with their cousins too, and said the two girls had taken off in the direction of our house (we live about 10 mins away by foot.)  I had walked there, so I took off after them in a hurry.  I saw someone along the way that said they had seen 2 little girls on a bike and scooter a few minutes earlier.  When I got home, their scooter and bike were on the front lawn, and the back door was locked, which I hadn't done before I left.  I knocked on it, and heard from within, "shhh, hurry and hide!"  I called to them that I knew they were in there, and if they didn't unlock the door, I'd get the key and they'd be in HUGE trouble.  I neglected to tell them that I didn't have a key with me, and they bought my bluff.  The door unlocked and they ran into the boys' room where they were both in pj's.  They admitted to running away to Waverly's house so they could have a sleepover.  They had every intention of keeping us all locked out all night so they could "have a sleepover".  This girl is going to be someone to be reckoned with.  Yikes.

We love you, Miss Waverly!  We love your exuberant nature, the way you giggle incessantly when you are excited about something, like your birthday coming up; we love how girly you are, and won't wear anything that does not fit the label of "pretty"; we love how you hear songs on the radio and sing them at home, sometimes misconstruing the lyrics into something funny ("should I give up, or should I keep on chasing cavemen"); we love how you speak for both you and Keaton, and everything is "we"; I don't love it, but I appreciate how determined you are.  That will serve you well in life.  And I love your slanty blue eyes:)
