CA Trip: Day 6, Beach

So before we left Utah, I had a great idea.  I don't always follow through on all my great ideas, but this one I did.  I thought, being from Utah, which is land-locked, wouldn't it be fun to have family pictures on the beach?  Yes, that would be so fun!  I found a local photographer in Living Social that would do a one-hour shoot for $59.  That's a great deal!  She had a great portfolio which matched my style, etc.  Only thing is, to get the right light, and a not-crowded beach all to ourselves, we had to be at the beach by 7:30am.  I was regretting it the night before when we didn't get to bed until after midnight after getting home from California Adventure.  6 kids plus myself up, hair done, dressed, out the door and arriving at the beach 15 minutes away by 7:30.  Heck, we can't even do that by 9am for church!  Oh, and don't forget that they had to be ready to smile and look happy.  After all that, it would have been worth it if the pictures had of turned out great.  I don't think our photographer knew what to do with a family of 8.  She had us standing under the pier and running up the sandy hill.  The tide was in and we were all wet, some of us drenched, after the first 3 shots.  And we never did get a develop-able shot of that.  I was not happy.  Brighton whined and complained through the whole thing.  Oh well, I'll develop my 3 pictures that worked and say it was worth it:)  It was an experience though.

After pictures, we walked around a bit.  We were at Newport Beach, which we hadn't been to before.  The pier went out aways, and there was the cutest little 50's diner at the end called Ruby's.  I thought it would be fun to come back later with just Scott for a shake or something, but it was quite expensive. Walking back, we ran into a group of guys with mini surfboards.  Being from Utah, I don't know all the surfer terms or activities, so I had to ask one of them.  They were skim boards.  We stopped to watch for a little while.  I was really impressed with how they caught the waves.  I've never observed surfing in person before.  They made it look so easy.  Scott was pretty sure the guy I talked to was Zac Efron.  We never saw him close enough again to get a positive ID, and he left after 30 mins, in a Maseratti, no less.  Scott had to IMDB him right away, and found out he lives just outside Newport and loves to surf.  Too bad I didn't realize it sooner.  I could have gawked a little more:)

After leaving Newport Beach, we were going to go back, but the steepness of the beach would have made it difficult to boogey board, so we decided to go back to Crystal Cove again.  I would have loved to explore all the surrounding beaches, but I realized after the Hollywood experience, you can lose half your vacation time by trying to drive too far.  Traffic is really heavy in CA.

This time the seaweed was not as abundant, thank goodness.  Something about coming out of the water with stuff wrapped around your legs gives me the willies.  It was a beautiful day!
Irelynd's going to try out for the next Baywatch series:)
This time the twins decided to amuse themselves by burying Scott.  He was such a good sport and let them bury him up to his ears...and then some.  The older kids joined in too when they heard the twins giggling so much.
It was getting hot sitting under the sun, and Waverly kept Scott from getting sand in his mouth that stuck to the sweat under his nose.  How thoughtful!

Scott was such a great sport and let them do whatever they thought up to torture him:)  What a great dad he is!
Looking at these pictures, I can still hear Keaton giggling as he poured bucket after bucket over his dad's head.  Even Boston is getting in on the action.

Savannah is saying, "yo Ninja!" a favorite saying of hers lately.  Now for the un-earthing!
We had another really fun day of sand castle-building, shell-collecting, and boogey boarding.  Can't believe this vacation is almost over.

After 3 hours, the kids had had enough sand and we left to spend some time at the hotel pool.  This time we found the main pool area, which was a series of 3 HUGE pools, plus a hot tub.  They loved going back and forth between the 3 pools and hot tub.  I was surprised they wanted to get out at all because it was freezing!  Warm during the day, very chilly at night.  As we were swimming, I was noticing that most of the other guests were older.  There were very few kids at the resort, and the ones we saw were with older people.  We were the only ones at the pool until another older lady got in.  She looks around and asks me, "which ones are yours?"  I looked around too and said, "all of them!"  I found it really funny at the looks I got from everyone that saw how many kids we had.  I'm proud to have 6 kids, and wouldn't have it any other way.  But out of Utah, we were definitely a freak show!

The Trip by Brighton Henry

When I got to our hotel in California, we swam.  Then we went to bed.  In the morning, we went to the pool again.  Next we went to California Adventure.  We went on California Scream.  It is a big giant high-speed roller coaster.  I was big enough to go on it.  It goes slow at first, then stops.  A little voice counts down from five to zero.  Then it starts going speedy.  It bullets us up and drops us down.  There were twistys and five loop-the-loops.  You actually go upside down.  At one part, you feel like you are getting flushed down a toilet.  It's awesome when you get off, but you feel a little dizzy.

CA trip: Day 5: California Adventure

Finally, the moment we've all been waiting for.  The beach was nice, Hollywood good, pool great, but THIS is what we came to California for.  The Disney parks.  We were so excited to finally make it to California Adventure.  We wanted to do Disneyland first, but had to wait til it was open longer hours on Friday.  No matter.  We're still excited!  We wanted to be there at park opening, but our stupid GPS routed us to Adventure Park in LA, and we had to back track to Anaheim.  Finally we made it.  This is us on the shuttle bus.

I wanted to come home with all kinds of great family pictures, but decided I could either do that, or make it onto more rides.  And avoid a cranky husband and kids for making them pose for yet another photo.  So most of these shots are while walking to another ride, or quickly shot before jumping on the ride.

None of us have ever been to CA Adventure before.  I went to Disneyland with my family when I was 8-ish, which was before the park even existed.  Scott went as a kid too, but has no memory of it.  It was fun to finally see this park in person.  After having been to DisneyWorld multiple times, it was so weird for me to see the park entrances across from each other.  In Orlando, you have to drive from one to the other unless you're ok with a mile+ walk.  Everything is so spread out.

This is the view right after we entered the park.
Every website I was on prior to the trip to plan our attack of the parks advised to run to Cars Land and get passes for Radiator Springs Racers.  I am so glad we did that.  Our fastpasses for this ride were for 7 hours later.  Kind of crazy!  While in Cars Land, we decided to do the rest of the rides before it got crazy.  Our first ride was Mater's Junkyard.  Scott kept Boston while I took the kids on.  It was fun, but so short!  I loved how decorated everything was.  It felt like you had jumped into the movie.

Cars is the boys' favorite Disney movie, so it was so fun for me to see them finally get to Cars Land, though the hero adoration was not as prolific as I would have thought.  I rode with the boys and the girls rode together.
Poor Boston missed out on a lot of the most fun rides.  Next time Buddy!

This was the only family photo we got this day.

We had to zigzag all over the park to make it to all the rides with as little wait time as possible.  This was another fun one Boston couldn't go on.  The kids got off this ride soaked, but when I rode it, it was minimal.  It sure was fun though!
Boston and I hung out and waited for everyone to get done.

For some reason, this plane had the boys really excited.  We haven't even seen Planes yet.

Soarin over California is another ride we all loved.  Too bad we only got to do it once.
The little kids LOVED the Monsters Inc ride.  This was one of the only ones we rode multiple times.  Mostly because the line was almost non-existent.
Boston liked the rides too.  I loved watching his expressions.  They were wide-eyed and open-mouthed.
We did Muppet Vision 3D.  The kids thought it was fun.

They kept asking if the holes in the wall at the end were real.
Ok, so at the beginning of the day, we passed a cart selling cotton candy.  Waverly so badly wanted some.  But we were running to get to another ride or pick up fast passes every time we passed one, and didn't take time to stop.  I felt really bad that the one desire of her heart was not being met in the Happiest Place on Earth.  Later in the afternoon we stopped for some Mickey ice cream.  I remember how yummy these were at DisneyWorld.  A few of us got ice cream, the rest got slushies.

Well, it's not cotton candy, but will it do for now Miss Waverly?
Waverly loved this ride.  Can you tell how excited she is from her picture?  It was a really cute ride, and we all could go on it, even better.

This photo of Boston cracks me up.  Like a deer in headlights.

Late in the afternoon, we finally made it over to Paradise Pier.  The kids were dying to go on Screaming over California.  I'm not a roller coaster person, so I readily volunteered to take the little ones on the merry go round and the other kiddy rides.

Such a cutie!  Hm, I wonder what paint color that is?  That'd look nice on my walls...

Keaton was happy to play big brother to Boston while they rode together.  They were so cute.  I hate merry-go-rounds, but I love seeing my kids get so excited on them.
While waiting for the big kids, we stood in line to see Jessie.  Waverly ran right up to her and gave her a big hug.  Brighton and the twins kept asking me before the trip if the characters there were real or just dressed in costume.  I was vague on my answer because I hate when that magical time is over and they no longer believe in it.  Waverly still believed today, and for that I was glad!
Then we were rewarded with an appearance of Buzz, Keaton's other hero, in case you can't tell from his face.
After this we met back up with everyone.  Scott and the kids convinced me to go with them on California Screamin.  It goes in a circle, so I wasn't too willing, but I didn't want my kids to see their mother chicken out, especially Brighton, my 6 year old son, who went on it 3 times.  I can't be thought of as yellow-bellied.
It was very fast, and there were a lot of take-your-breath-away drops.  Once was enough for me to say I did it.  I screamed "I hate you Scott" the whole way through.
We went back to ride Radiator Springs Racers later that evening.  It was so fun!  The girls and I took pictures while the boys took their turn on the ride.
We also were fortunate to run into this guy.  He talked to us for a while.  I was sad the boys didn't get to meet him while he was there.  Irelynd decided she was hungry, and we went to the Cozy Cone Motel stand, where she bought "Pop-cone".  They also offered Chili Cone Carne, and frozen Cone-coctions.  I thought it was all very cute!
Disney has a lot of really fun rides.  This wasn't one of them.  It basically goes like this:  these floating tires basically hover over the ground a few inches, and you lean to make them go.  Slowly.  Very slowly.  Then the ride is over and you have to get off.  The end.

We loved the decor of Bug's Life, with everything so big.  We had fun spotting different items that made up everything around us, like a drinking straw for a pole.

The boys thought it was funny to ride a caterpillar train.
We hurried to squeeze in some more rides before the park closed down.  We had intended to go to the Tower of Terror, but the wait was too long all day.  I hate rides that drop, as does Scott, but Savannah and Irelynd really wanted to ride it.  I felt bad we missed it.  Next time!

By the end of the night, the little kids had had it.  They got pulled all over the park as we zig-zagged across it all day and didn't ever complain.  I was so proud of how well they did!  No whining all day.

This was the jelly fish ride which was kind of lame too.
We finished out the night watching Fantasmic, which was really cool, and worth wading through the crowds afterwards.

These were everyone's favorite rides:
Scott: California Screamin
Jill: Grizzly River Run
Savannah, Irelynd and Brighton all shared the same ones: California Screamin and Radiator Springs Racers
Waverly:  Ariel's Undersea Adventures
Keaton:  Mater's Junkyard Jamboree (and Radiator Springs Racers)
What a fun day we had, and hopefully made some fun memories!
