The Pumpkin dilemma

Every year's dilemma:  Which pumpkin should we choose?  We went to the Pumpkin Patch in Sprinville again to pick out pumpkins, take a ride on their tractor-pulled wagon, and play in the corn box.  It was a very windy, very COLD day.  We didn't stay as long as we'd like due to the cold, but we brought home enough corn kernels in our clothes and shoes to feed a hungry donkey for a month.

 Cowabunga, dudes!

Carrots are for rabbits, not for lambs

I got up one morning to find these 2 sitting in the middle of the kitchen floor, eating carrots.  When I asked them why, they told me that "little lambies like carrots".  Notice how great they are to share the costume?

Scarecrow Festival 2012

A long time ago we used to go to the Scarecrow Festival put on by Westridge Academy.  Aunt Shawna works there, so we went again, after several years of not going.  It was even free this year!  Score!  The kids had a great time.  They took a ride on the WRA Express to begin with.
We took some pictures.  Savannah was with a friend that day.

We also played on the bounce houses, did a rock climbing wall, played a few carnival games, and bought prizes.  But the best thing they loved was flying their rockets.  While I didn't get any pictures of it, they made paper and foam rockets, which they then shot up into the sky using air compressor guns.  It was so fun seeing how high they could make them go!  I might have to buy one for next year's round of birthday parties.

A "fairy" good time

The library had a mother-daughter fairy party in October.  Waverly learned how to become a fairy that day.  First, you have to look like a fairy.  This was accomplished by making a tulle headband with lots of sparkly embellishments.  The final product was very fairy-like, don't you think?

Next, we listened to how Alice the Fairy became an honorary fairy.
Then we wrote down a fairy wish, and put it in a special bag.  Our fairy wish magically turned into a magical green pebble for us to take home!

Then we had to complete a challenging obstacle course.  First was bouncing from flower to flower like a fairy,
climbing through a hoop, blowing a bubble, and crawling through a fairy tunnel.
Mission accomplished!  Waverly became a fairy with a special certificate to prove it!
Strike a fairy pose of exhilaration!
We found a fellow fairy friend from preschool known as Nora.
Some fairy frolicking with Bingo, and refreshments of pink lemonade, berry burst Oreos, and pixie sticks.  What a fun day!  I'm ready for my strawberry Jello bath!

Costume fittings

When I pulled the Halloween stuff out this year, we also pulled the costume box inside.  The kids had the best time raiding it, reliving past Halloween glory, and playing games with the dress ups inside.  Keaton and Waverly both fought over this little lamb costume from 8 years ago.  I originally made it for Irelynd (she and Savannah were Little Bo Peep and her sheep), but every child has worn it since then.  I've recapped my investment:)  Keaton made the CUTEST lamb with his huge blue eyes and grin.  I woke up one morning with him standing next to my bed grinning at me.  Who wouldn't want that sight to wake up to?
When Keaton smiles big, he shuts his eyes.  As I was taking pictures, I told him to open his eyes more.  This was him following directions.
When she wasn't being the sheep, Waverly loved this witch costume with my big floppy witch hat.
Can you guess Iron Man's real identity?  He was supposed to be Jake (from Jake and the Neverland Pirates), but saw this costume and immediately changed his mind.  So Keaton was upgraded from Cubby to Jake.  (As you'll later see).
 Half witch, half belle.

Irelynd went as Scarlet O'Hara this year.  She was going to be Athena, but loved this lacy, feminine costume instead.  Which was good for me, as I was feeling SO pregnant!

Pre-Halloween fun

Aunt Michelle sent us a fun Halloween box again.  Included in this year's activities was a rice crispies pumpkin mold and decorator gels to make faces.  We had a great time making our jack-o-lanterns and eating them!

Rube Goldberg

Pop Quiz:  What is a Rube Goldberg?  Multiple choice:
A.  Rube Goldberg is our Jewish friend.
B.  It's the next best thing to a Rubic Cube.
C.  It's a given assignment by an 8th grade science teacher, meant to teach kids about the 7 different machines, and how they work.  If set up correctly, it is a "deliberately over-engineered or overdone machine that performs a very simple task in a very complex fashion, usually including a chain reaction."
If you answered C, you are correct!  Savannah and her partner, Chloe, spent hours upon hours trying to get their machine to work.  The goal was to pop a balloon.  They used dominoes, books, a marble run, pulleys, etc, to accomplish this.  They came in under the required time allowed, so the grade given wasn't great, but I think they both learned a lot (including how to hate Rube Goldbergs, and I'm fairly certain they'll never want to play with dominoes again in their lifetimes!).  I wish I could have seen it work, but both refused to line up the books or dominoes again.  Great job, girls!

Twins

Though I've already spotlighted both twins, I had to include photos of them together.  They're growing up too fast, and may not like each other someday, so I have to capture their closeness and cuteness while it lasts.
They've always gotten along great, and been best of friends, but this year has seen some differences creeping in.  This year has been a love-hate relationship with each other.  Their interests are starting to diversify with their gender, and I hear frequent outbursts of "I hate you" or "you're mean!"  It breaks my heart to hear the twins not get along; aren't twins supposed to be best friends?  They generally are when left alone, but introduce a third person into the equation, and there's often fighting.  Though, they still enjoy being silly and giggling together.  They love baths [though that'll be over this year, I'm sure!], riding bikes, playing in the dirt, sledding, and getting into mischief together.

I hate to see these 2 grow up so quickly, though the mischief wears me out!  I hope they stay close friends as they grow.  We love you, little twinners!

Keaton at 4 {& 1/2}

Everyone always asks me if Keaton ever talks.  Yes.  Yes, he does.  Mostly squeals, but yes, he does talk.  He'll repeat himself until you say something, too.  That's really fun.  He is the calmest of the bunch, though.  And he has the cutest smile that will melt my heart when I'm angry, as shown above.  Not sure what he's doing with the hand thing.  Keaton is the little brother that gets pushed around by Brighton and Waverly both.  He likes to wrestle and play cars and dig in the dirt with Brighton, but when Brighton's away, he'll agree to play Barbies or dress-ups with Waverly.  Maybe that makes him versatile?
 Keaton's favorite movie is Cars.
Favorite tv show:  Jake and the Neverland Pirates, and Phineas and Ferb
Favorite color:  Blue
Books:  5 Little Monkeys and Thomas the Train
Some favorite things to do:  Fold laundry with me, help clean the bathroom, play outside, ride his bike, shovel, play with Brighton and Waverly
Best friend:  Waverly and Brighton
Food:  Rice, fried rice, scrambled eggs, pizza, cold cereal, and cooked carrots
Favorite thing he owns:  His thumb and his blue blanket.  It had a tag once, but he used to rub it on the end of his nose while he sucked his thumb, and it came off.  Now he bites his blanket, and it has a chunk missing.  That poor blanket has been cut in two, sewn back together, taken out and pounded with rocks, and dragged everywhere with him.  So far, it's still holding together.  We'll both be sad when it eventually disintegrates.
When he grows up, he wants to be whatever Brighton wants to be, so a builder or a fireman.
Keaton will come up and tell me he likes me, several times a day.  [See Waverly's post about kissing up to the management].  He loves cars and trucks, and playing in the mud and water.  He loves having baths, and shoveling the driveway, and hot chocolate.  When you push him in the swings, the higher the better, but don't approach him for a conversation or a hug or to throw him up in the air unless invited because you will see the crusty side of him, which is usually the side he presents to my family.  He can be quite sour.  He usually scowls and squeals at Savannah, prompting her to say in frustration, "he hates me!"  It's become a joke between us that he'll still be doing that at age 82, dropping his dentures in the process.  He just squeals louder when we laugh at that.
He can be quite tender-hearted.  He adores his baby brother, and always made sure I stayed hydrated while nursing the baby by bringing me my jug of water.  We cut his curls off this year, and I miss them greatly!  He has grown into such a big boy this past year, going to preschool with Waverly, and hip hop with Brighton.  I miss my funny baby, but I'm enjoying seeing the emerging personality of this little boy.  Poor Keaton is the runt of the family, but Heavenly Father made up for it by giving him his Daddy's blue-green eyes, which I love!  He's the only one in 6 kids that got them, lucky little boy!
He is so independent, and likes to pick out his own clothes, dress himself, and pour his own milk.  It generally doesn't matter what we have for breakfast in the morning; he has to have his bowl of cold cereal first, like most Americans insist on their morning cup of coffee.
He may look sweet and innocent, but he can be every bit as naughty as Waverly.  Not up to Big Brother Brighton's status of Master Of Naughtiness yet, but he would be a good understudy.  He's always game to Waverly's whisperings of "let's go do ____ when Mommy's not looking!".  That's how they ended up in the ER twice last year for accidental overdose.
We sure love you, our little Monkey!
