Fright Night 2010

Introducing Princess Waverly the first,
Fire Chief Keaton,
Sock Hop Savannah,
and Frankie's espoused.  Sir Brighton the noble Knight wouldn't cooperate.
As you can see, Brighton's not looking too excited.  I think he's mad because he's not able to slay the dragon that was supposed to have been Keaton, on account of the hood was not fun to wear.  I love coordinating costumes with those willing to do so, and I had the three little ones coordinated as a knight, dragon, and princess.  Oh well, better luck next year.  Waverly still made for a very cute, very short and squatty princess.
A big difference this year was Savannah ditched us to go with Chloe and Savannah's best friend from school.  That was a little sad for me to see, but she only has a year, maybe two more of trick-or-treating.  My baby's growing up.
Aren't they so cute?
Another difference was going trick-or-treating with the cousins.  In order for there not to be a fight break out over who "got" Grace, visiting from out of state, we all went together.  The four cousins had a ball together.  I'm so glad they got this experience and have each other.  I hope they have great memories of growing up together.
We started in Sallie's neighborhood, and ended in mine.

It was a cold and rainy night.  Not the best weather for being out.  But the twins didn't care and loved the experience.  Waverly is fiercely independent, and when I tried to take her hand, she'd put it behind her and say, "walk self".  Then Keaton would come up beside me and put his warm little hand in mine.  I love this kid!

Halloween dinner with the fam

With Scott's brother Spencer and his family in town unexpectedly, we decided to have everyone over for a Halloween dinner.  We were going to dress up, but met some resistance; you know who you are:)  Just as well; my French maid costume would've embarrassed.  lol

We had a yummy dinner of creamed peas (in case you can't see it, there's toasted bread with signs saying RIP, rest in peas.  Isn't that so cute?  I stole the idea from a Facebook friend.)...

mummy dogs...
Mummy meatloaf  (the cheese melted too much and didn't resemble bandages any longer)...
KFC, apples and dip, cookies, coconut pie, and root beer.  I love the way the dry ice looks in this picture.
The kids table.  Keaton is hiding behind Cami.

The adults table.  That's Shawna dressed like Squiggy--remember him?  You can see Sallie's hat on the left side.
A close up.  Isn't it fabulous?  So much better in person, even.  She's so artistic.
Ah, this picture doesn't do it justice.
We intended on playing games, but everyone was tired and it broke up early.  Plus I was going to kick them all out by 9pm anyway, to get set up for my baby shower the next day.  We'll have to do the costumed thing next year, guys!  Start thinking!

Hobo Zombie vs. Frankie's chic

Since we changed schools this year, costumes were no longer pre-determined by the school's social studies unit.  In the charter school, Halloween was celebrated as The History Fair, and the kids of each grade would wear costumes from the time period their class was studying.  That's why Savannah was a Southern Belle and Irelynd an Egyptian last year.  I kind of miss that; it made costumes much easier than having to choose from such a wide array, and I thought it was more interesting and fun.  That said, Savannah had decided weeks earlier that she wanted to be a zombie this year, but Irelynd really couldn't decide.  The night before the school Halloween party found us still without costumes.  Using some of my old, torn up clothes, Scott helped Savannah with hers, and I adapted the dress-up clothes into Bride of Frankenstein for Irelynd.  Neither costume cost us a penny.  I was really happy with Irelynd's; I'm not usually so resourceful!  I even spray-painted some black roses for her to carry.  What a marvelous invention was spray paint!
I used a paper cup to hold her hair up, and we had some black hair spray paint on hand.  Voila!

Savannah tried to be scary, but couldn't keep a dead face.
She was offended, though, because a lot of the kids at school wanted to know if she was a hobo.  Or a dirty hippie.  She did have twigs in her hair.

The dramatics were Irelynd's idea.  That girl cracks me up.

Spooky lunch

The girls' annual Halloween lunch.  I have so much fun deciding what to put in and what to name it.  You can't see it, but I carved the orange like a pumpkin, removed the fruit inside, and filled it with a mixture of other fruit.  I'm not sure they really appreciate all the work involved, but it's fun for me.

Ghoul's night out

My sister-in-law Sallie threw a Witch hat party shortly before Halloween for ladies in her ward.  I, of course, shamelessly invited myself.  She knows how to make things beautiful, and I just try to keep up.  I never knew that setting food out on a table for a crowd could be done so glamourously.  Wild sunflowers in a vase?  She has an eye for beauty.   Therefore, there was more glitter here than on the floor of Elton John's closet.  We got together for a fabulous dinner (she's also a good cook, as anyone knows who's looked in my recipe book.  Half my recipes start with "Sallie's ____") of salad, bread, minestrone, and chicken gnocchi soup.  For dessert she made pumpkin cheesecake.  So yum!  After dinner we made our witch hats fabulous, with supplies we both brought and scavenged from Sallie's supply.

Cinnamon stick apple cider to drink.

She had cute little details everywhere, like these glittered plastic spiders.

I thought this contrast was ironic, with the ghost in back and the picture of Christ in front.

This cutie posed with my undecorated hat on.  I made this myself, actually, from Sallie's scraps and pattern.

Have you ever seen eyes this blue?

It was a fun night, and I got a very cute hat out of it.  I forgot to take a picture of the people, or the completed hats.  At least I got the food, right?  Nothing more important than that!
